For this project, we are taking you to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where a few steps from the capital’s city centre, a roughly one hundred square metre flat has undergone a complete and transformative renovation. In charge of the project were Caroline Horgnies and her team from the Belgian interior design firm Matriochka. We caught up with the founder to find out more about her, the project itself and her use of NOËL & MARQUET decorative elements. Watch the full interview in our video on our YouTube channel.

One of the main concerns for this city flat was space. To create it, Caroline Horgnies and her team began by tackling the central and most important room in the residence, the living room, which underwent a radical transformation. The false ceiling was completely removed to gain height and highlight the majestic roof beams. This decision resulted in an extension of the space, creating a precious sense of volume and height that has completely changed the atmosphere of this apartment.
The interior design team then took advantage of the abundance of light to further emphasise this impression. Located on the top floor of a building with an unobstructed view and numerous windows, daylight easily penetrates the flat. By playing with light colours to maximise natural light and strategically placed light fittings, the feeling of space is further enhanced.
The studio also took care of the flooring, the furniture – some of which was tailor-made – and the use of decorative profiles to give the flat a new charm.
“Our clients, who have a very fine collection of paintings in their family, wanted to integrate them significantly into their new interior. We carefully selected the works that best suited the project. Then we designed each frame according to their dimensions. Every detail was carefully thought out to highlight the paintings and accentuate their artistic and poetic character.” – Matriochka Interior Design
NOËL & MARQUET’s decorative elements serve above all as a common thread throughout this residence. Present in every room, the different profiles ensure architectural uniformity and consistency of style. They have also helped to infuse a French-style classicism that now fundamentally characterises the entire living space.
The FL2 WALLSTYL® skirting can be found in every room of the home. It was chosen above all for its distinctive silhouette, which accentuates the classic style of the interior. Its height of 12 cm also helps to clearly separate the wall from the floor, gently delimiting the rooms. This feeling is reinforced by the white paintwork, which contrasts sharply with the parquet and tiled floors.
The WL7 WALLSTYL® chair rails play a key role on the walls. Thin and elegant, they highlight architectural and decorative elements throughout the interior. Placed throughout the flat, their frame arrangement is typical of Haussmann-style interiors. Some of the wall frames even gracefully surround the many paintings in the flat.
“What these products bring to our project is a refined touch, added elegance, added character – in short, that little finishing touch that is obviously very important in interior design” explains Caroline Horgnies.
